CHUMS - CAST IRON GRIDDLE

The client featured an existing all-white-label cast iron cookware lineup before commissioning this reversible rectangle griddle. Basically, I’d be forming an on-brand design to a section of an existing design to leverage existing tooling block dimensions. Even if this was the single item of that lineup with a custom-CAD element, I was reluctant to feature it here by it’s mostly off-the-shelf silhouette. I penned a firm condemnation of design plagiarism in the MO section of this website and would need a combo of reasons to feature it.

The amount of engineering that went into honing this simple form is what compelled me to showcase it here. Considering weight, thermal flow, rigidity and cooking performance forced this project to be more involved and teaching than I expected. Though I was tasked to make a griddle that looked like existing market items, I’m glad that I chose to start from scratch and acquaint myself with yet another material to add to my arsenal.
